BACKGROUND
OF ZALICO
The
Zambian Library Consortium (ZALICO), which was established in 2004,
is committed to promote and support national co-operative initiatives.
VISION
ZALICO's
mission is to enhance access to information and the sharing of resources
for the benefit of information users and other stakeholders in Zambia
through national co-operation.
MISSION
The
mission of the Zambian Library Consortium is to act as a catalyst
for leading, supporting, motivating and championing access to information
resources for library and information users in Zambia.
OBJECTIVES
The
main objective is to take advantage of the new ICTs to encourage,
coordinate and develop the educational, instructional and public
education uses of library and information systems that are now available
countrywide, or maybe available in the future, to the end that the
benefits arising therefrom may have the widest possible impact and
effect on the development of the individual citizens, the institutions
and the nation as a whole. This can be summarised as follows:
Access to information
To establish national
and international partnerships, agreements for collaborative collection
building, information resource sharing and establishment of a national
ICT infrastructure for the benefit of clients.
Training
and capacity building
To provide developmental
opportunities for academic, research librarians and workers to enhance
their ability to provide superior services to improve national access
to information and the level of information literacy.
Communication, liaison
and lobbying
To act as advocacy
channel to government and other bodies by maintaining at national
and international levels prominent profile in planning and decision
making, and in so doing to contribute, develop and influence national
information policy.
Infrastructure and
funding
To actively seek sponsorships
and donor fund to facilitate the acquisition and utilisation of
compatible hardware, software and networks for optimal information
resource sharing for all participating libraries. |
